History
We’re the oldest and the newest church in Pittsfield, Massachusetts — created from the joining together in January 2024 of the congregations of First Church of Christ, Congregational (1764) and South Congregational Church (1850).
The United Church of Christ, Pittsfield, is the result of a historic reunion between two longstanding congregations: the South Congregational Church and the First Church of Christ, both pillars of faith and community in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This union, which took place in 2023, represents a blending of rich histories, traditions, and commitments to service that stretch back over centuries.
First Church of Christ, Pittsfield
The First Church of Christ, established in the heart of Pittsfield in the early 18th century, was the first church in the area, born out of the desires of the town's earliest settlers to create a place for worship, community, and civic life. It served as a spiritual and social hub, deeply embedded in the fabric of Pittsfield. For generations, it was known for its leadership in social justice, civic engagement, and its dedication to nurturing the spiritual lives of its members. Throughout its history, First Church hosted prominent speakers, supported abolitionist causes, and actively participated in shaping the moral and ethical direction of the community.
South Congregational Church, Pittsfield
South Congregational Church emerged later in the 19th century, responding to the city's growing population and evolving spiritual needs. Located in southern downtown Pittsfield, South Church quickly developed its identity as a warm and welcoming congregation dedicated to service, education, and mission work. The church became known for its inclusive community, engaging worship, and commitment to social outreach, particularly its significant role in feeding those in need through its food pantry, which serves thousands of households every month. The congregation's dedication to justice, compassion, and mercy has been a hallmark of its ministry.
2023 Reunion
Over the years, the paths of these two churches often crossed as they shared in common ministry goals, collaborated on community projects, and occasionally found themselves engaged in lively discussions about the issues of the day. Both congregations held a deep commitment to social justice, inclusivity, and spiritual growth, guided by their shared values rooted in the Gospel. As their missions began to align more closely, a growing recognition emerged of the potential strength and vitality that could come from joining forces.
In 2023, after years of prayerful discernment, conversation, and planning, South Congregational Church and the First Church of Christ formally reunited as the United Church of Christ, Pittsfield. This union marks not only the blending of two historic congregations but also a renewed commitment to serve God, the community, and the world with justice, compassion, and love.
Today, as the United Church of Christ, Pittsfield, the congregation carries forward the legacies of both churches, united in purpose and vision for a hopeful future.
